What are some mind-blowing facts that sound like ‘BS’, but are actually true?

Answer by Siddharth Jayshankar:

If you see a fire, what are the ways in which you'd try to put it out? Water? CO2? Dry powder? Nukes?
Now if I were to tell you that it's possible to use nukes to put out a fire, it's hard to believe. Right?
But believe it or not, The Russians have done so! Yes, you that read right, they've used nuclear detonations to put out a fire.
In December 1963, a major fire occurred at gas wells near Bukhara, Uzbekistan in Soviet Russia. The fire raged on for over 3 years and caused a wastage of about 10 million cubic metres of valuable fuel per day. For three years, everything was tried to stop the flame from dousing it with water to hydraulic fracturing, but in vain.
Finally in 1966, a decision was taken to seal the gas well using a contained nuclear explosion. The theory was that the shock wave from the explosion would compress the porous strata of rocks preventing the gas from escaping. In September 1966, a nuclear explosive was lowered into the ground and exploded. The explosion put out the flame and sealed the well in a matter of just 23 seconds! A resounding success.
