What are the top ten films in 21st century's? by Apoorv Awasthi
Answer by Apoorv Awasthi:
The popular films like The Dark Knight, LOTR, Django Unchained, Inception, etc. are already covered.
I will list some of the lesser-known films which were equally good, if not better.
Not a ranking, just a list.
- Boyhood (2014)
Not exactly an unknown film, but not as popular as I think it should be. Its a story of a 6-year old boy who grows up dealing with school, his sister, his parents’ divorce, girlfriends, etc. to become an 18-year old adult going to college. Shot over 12 years, this is a one-of-a-kind film and definitely, one of the best.
- Her (2013)
A man falls in love with an A.I. in a story set in the near future. This is one of those films which is amazing, and at the same time, a little disturbing. Joaquin Phoenix gives a great performance, talking to a computer voice most of the time, which has the voice of Scarlett Johansson.
- The Hunt (2012)
An intense thriller-drama about a man wrongly accused of molesting a little girl. It shows the way society is so quick to judge anyone, even the people they have known their whole lives.
Its a Danish film, and was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars.
- Drive (2011)
Not your Fast and Furious movie by any means, this was one of the most brilliant and stylish movie I saw. The music, the cinematography, everything was great. The ‘always cool’ Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan were excellent in this. Gosling’s best performance I believe.
- The Lives of Others (2006)
During the Cold War in East Germany, a man spying on a couple becomes highly involved in their lives and becomes sympathetic to their plight.
Won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar.
- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
One of the most unconventional film I’ve seen and also one of the best love stories. Amazing writing and an even better screenplay. You think Pulp Fiction was non-linear storytelling? Wait till you see this. Jim Carrey is superb when he is not playing a dumb clown.
- Short Term 12 (2013)
A story of the staff of a group home for troubled teenagers. Its an emotional drama where the staff struggle with the kids and with their own lives. Brie Larson’s performance was amazing. John Gallagher Jr. was equally good.
- Shame (2011)
A powerful film, one of Steve McQueen’s best. A difficult film to watch but Fassbender’s performance and the direction makes it worthwhile.
- A Prophet (2009)
A young Arab man is sent to prison in France. He tries to spend his sentence peacefully on his own but a mafia boss has other plans.
Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars.
- Ex Machina (2015)
One of the best sci-fi films in recent times. A man talks to a humanoid A.I. as an experiment to determine its level of intelligence and other human qualities.
Other great films of the century:
A Separation (2011, Iran)
In Bruges (2008)
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (2008)
The Big Short (2015)
Children of Men (2006)
Into The Wild (2007)
Lost in Translation (2003)
Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
