What are some mind-blowing facts that sound like 'BS', but are actually true? by Jack Epner
Answer by Jack Epner:
Spider silk can stop a bullet
Spider dragline silk has a tensile strength of roughly 1.3 GPa, just slightly lower than that of steel, but spider silk is much less dense, so a given weight of spider silk is five times as strong as the same weight of steel.
Artist, Jalila Essaïdi, and cell biologist Abdoelwaheb El Ghalbzouri, have created a blend of human skin and spider silk that is three times stronger than Kevlar and can stop a bullet traveling at about half-speed. There are other blends out there (such as goat milk and spider silk) being developed for a similar purpose. It may only be a matter of time before bulletproof vests are made of spiderwebs.
