Do Koreans split the bill after a meal? by Jay Sim

Answer by Jay Sim:

Splitting the bill means to take the total cost and split it between the two. However, Koreans (And Asians) in general will never try to split the bill.

Instead, they will try to pay for the whole meal.

Whenever you go to an Asian restaurant and there are two groups at the same table, chances are, you’ll see them argue at the top of their lungs about who pays. The one who pays is the polite one.

What you should do is try to pay for the whole meal. I mean, even looking from a western view, it is the polite thing to do. (I had one of my white friends verify this.)

For example, my family and I were eating out with another family. At the end of the meal, my father managed to secure paying rights and paid. However, not to be one upped, the father of the other family left money on top of our car and ran off before we could give it back.

This is serious business folks.
