Humor: What are some of the greatest examples of presence of mind? by Krishna Prasad
Answer by Krishna Prasad:
Our Ex-PM Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee is known for his great presence of mind and coming up with stinging yet humorous repartees:
1) His reply to a journalist on the terror camps in Pakistan:
Journalist: ‘Padosi kehte hai ki ek haath se taali nahi bajti’ (our neighbour (Pakistan) says you cannot clap with one hand – implying that both India and Pakistan should jointly solve the problem of terror camps)
Mr Vajpayee: ‘humne kaha ki chutki to baj sakti hai!’ (I say, with one hand, you can at least snap your fingers – effectively exhorting Pakistan to begin a first hand action on terror camps)
2) His reply to Mr Mr Ram Vilas Paswan on Lord Ram:
Mr Paswan: ‘BJP bahut Ram ki baatein karti hai. Par unmein koi ram nahi hai. Mera naam to ram hi hai.’ (BJP brags a lot about Lord Ram. But they don’t have a Ram among them. But my name has Ram)
Mr Vajpayee literally shuts up Mr Paswan with this gem of a retort: ‘Paswanji, haram mein bhi ram hota hai!’ (Mr Paswan, even ‘Haram’ has Ram) – the Arabic/Urdu word ‘Haram’ means ‘forbidden/unlawful.’
Please pardon me for howlers in translation.
